Thesis and Abstract

After changing my research topic and changing little ideas in my new topic here is my thesis?

What would be the most effective Heating and Cooling systems to make the TCC Turf soccer field a comfortable playing surface?

Abstract start:


What would be the most effective Heating and Cooling systems to make the TCC Turf soccer
field a comfortable playing surface? There are many different heating and cooling systems that could be used in this project. I will be mainly focusing on a couple; Geothermal, and maybe transferring heat from the field to heat the pool. The other main system is called the EPIC system, the one major problem I have with this is I would have to put a separate heating system in if I decided to use this.

The epic system is a system that focuses on the cooling aspect of my report. On a sunny day field temperatures can be reduced by 50 degrees Fahrenheit. When temperatures are reaching 40 degrees Celsius fields without cooling systems can be from 10-20 degrees hotter than the temperature outside.

Going geothermal is another thought, and using the heat taken off the field to heat the pool. Another thought is maybe using the heat the seating around or the field house.

Here is a quick update on my new research proposal... Since i changed up my project i have written a new, but quick, proposal. This shortened version is my "corrections". Thanks guys hope you enjoy this one.


Summary Statement of Proposed Project:

With soccer being one of the most popular sports worldwide there is always going to be a need for fields. I have focused in on the turf field at the Tournament Capital centre in Kamloops (TCC).Trying to play on a turf field that averages around 10-15 degrees hotter than the temperature outside is not easy, as well as trying to play on a field with snow. What if there was a way to cool the turf by 10-20 degrees Celsius at least in the summer, and heat the turf enough to keep the snow off in the winter? Purpose:

The purpose of this proposal is to find a way to cool the turf at TCC in the summer and heat it in the winter. Being a soccer player I know first hand how hot the turf gets in the middle of summer, as well in the winter when there is snow on the field it is kind of hard to play. People have been playing soccer all over the world for over 100 years and the sport is still growing. A stadium that can economically stay cool, at turf level, in stifling temperatures is vital for players, as well as keep the snow off in the winter.

Goals and Objectives of the Project:

In this project the goal is to find a way to cool the turf in the summer and heat the turf in the winter. With these systems, the objective is to find a way to neutralize the issues and keep the turf playable at any temperature. I am looking at a couple different systems to find out which one would be better and more effective; Geothermal and the EPIC system. It would also be ideal to somehow transfer the heat taken from the field to heat up the pool at TCC.


Methodology and Analytical Approach:

For this project the plan is to take many different approaches to find accurate information. Finding the easiest and at the same time most efficient way of running this system is the first step. The Internet will be the main resource for searching information on the actual cooling and heating systems. Also, looking at stadiums and how these can work competently with one another. Looking at different types of cooling systems to find which would benefit turf and the climate of kamloops. Another way to find this information will be at the library, whether it is at the Thompson Rivers University library or the TNRD library. The books and e-books that will be used include: HVAC, different types eco-friendly systems (to compare cooling systems with other systems to see how things work). Additionally, the climate will be another main factor. Then putting all the information collected together to make the best system work for the climate. Interviews will be set up with the city to figure out who built the field and to try to get as much information as possible. Getting in touch with some engineers who have set up cooling and heating systems in turf fields will also be a good addition.

One Thought

Here is a quick section on a thought i had for the turf at TCC. The EPIC system layer has tubes running lengthwise for Air Flow potential... This system is can reduce temperature by 10 degrees Celcius and provides some storm water management will could be something to look into.

WEEEEKEND

hows everyones weekend going? Mines pretty busy but I always find time to blog. Just wanted to hit you guys up with a little messy. Got some interested comments on my last post and i like the ideas. I am trying to get in touch with the city to figure out who built the field and whether they have anything under the field or not. But you know how hard it is to get through to anyone these days, especially at the city. Always on lunch break. (chris)
Anyways i was going to throw up a little design i made but i forgot my disky at school so i will have to do it tomorrow. totally check it out and i will show you how neat that is!!!!

Question

I have been looking into the TCC field and have found out they have some heating running under the field for the winter days. With my plans to put cooling under the field this may be useful as there is already something under the field. I have noticed that in the winter the field is never cleared of snow even tho they say it is heated. Do you think I should look into cooling the field for summer while heating it more during the winter so the field is cleared for people to play all year round? Just looking for suggestions.

A little switcheroo

So I finally went and had a meeting with my mentor, Mindy, and have decided to change up my research topic. Instead of trying to find the best way to cool a soccer stadium in the middle east I have decided to keep my research local and look into cooling the turf at TCC stadium. During those summer days when temperatures reach up to 40 degrees +, the turf is a nightmare on your feet. Being a soccer player I have to deal with this every summer and don't enjoy it. Im going to look into different ways to cool the turf down and see how much I can cool it.

Just another day!!!

Hello classmates, with more research i have found out that in Qatar they are building a stadium with an in-stadium cooling system (Thank you Matt). Instead of just studying one way to make this happen I am now going to look at three different ways to see which would be more efficient. Between solar energy: using to solar farms which will transfer gather energy to a city grid where the water will be heated by sun collectors then stored in an on site storage tank, Deep lake cooling system: using the water from the ocean as a heat sink for climate control, and passively cooling using principles of biomimetic architecture. If anyone has any ideas on a thesis i am open for suggestion. Thanks
